I first met Jim (Jimmy) when I was about 10 years old.  He lived two doors away from my grandparents...Young and Chalmers. He was a good athelet even then.  We both thought that fireworks were cool..untill the day he blew off one of his fingers lighting one. He was a nice guy and I was glad to run into him again at Denby....He left too soon.

James K. Stringwell Scholarship Fund

Family and friends of James K. Stringwell have generously established a new scholarship fund to honor Jim's memory. The fund will award need-based scholarships to students graduating from public high schools in Washtenaw County who will be attending a public college or university in Michigan.

Jim Stringwell passed away peacefully in August, 2011 surrounded by his wife Carol and his son Erik and daughter Britten after battling cancer. He was born in Detroit in 1946 and grew up in the area.

Jim played football for Eastern Michigan University and after graduation, moved to Harbor Springs, where he met Carol and started their family. The Stringwells moved back to Ann Arbor after 17 years in Northern Michigan, where their children attended Huron High School.

Jim's humor, compassion and generous spirit drew numerous friends with whom he maintained close bonds throughout his life. An avid athlete and outdoorsman, he sailed in Mackinaw races, skied, golfed, played hockey, biked and participated in marathons throughout the world. Jim loved sports and generously supported high school and college athletics. Although Jim traveled internationally for business and pleasure, his happiest times were back home and outdoors enjoying family and friends. His strength and courage has been an inspiration to many, and this scholarship fund will continue his legacy by supporting students’ college education.
